About NIFT
The National Institute of Fashion Technology is a statutory institute under the Ministry of Textiles, set up in 1986 and governed by the NIFT Act 2006. Admissions 2026, for the academic year that runs from August 2026 to May or June 2027, are through the NIFT Entrance Examination (NIFTEE), conducted by the National Testing Agency, followed by seat allocation. The Admissions 2026 prospectus lists seven Bachelor of Design programmes of four years: Fashion Design, Fashion Communication, Fashion Interiors, Textile Design, Knitwear Design, Leather Design and Accessory Design, plus Bachelor of Fashion Technology, and three master's programmes: Master of Design, Master of Fashion Management and Master of Fashion Technology. The prospectus states that NIFT has 20 campuses.
This guide and the practice test follow the Bachelor of Design General Ability Test (GAT), the objective computer-based paper. The Admissions Guidelines 2026 print it as Section A: 100 questions in 120 minutes, in English or Hindi. The timetable is 10:00 a.m. to 12:00 noon. The printed split is Communication Ability and English Comprehension 40, Quantitative Ability 20, Analytical and Logical Ability 15, and General Knowledge and Current Affairs 25. There is no case-study block on the B.Des GAT. Each question is of 1 mark, a wrong answer takes away 0.25, and a blank scores nothing. The NTA bulletin says each question has four options and one of them is chosen. Its computer-based-test annexure shows one countdown for the paper and says the candidate may move among sections during that time. If the Hindi and English wordings differ, the English wording is final. A calculator is not allowed. For a candidate with benchmark disability the bulletin gives compensatory time of 20 minutes per hour, on a pro-rata basis when the paper is not three hours.
Bachelor of Design candidates also sit the Creative Ability Test (CAT) the same day, a pen-and-paper test from 3:00 p.m. to 6:00 p.m. The guidelines describe it as a test of intuitive ability, observation, concept development and design ability, including creative use of colour and illustration. The NTA bulletin's table prints the B.Des pair as 120 + 180 minutes and 100 + 3 questions, so the CAT is listed as three tasks in three hours. Drawings are not marked here. Candidates shortlisted on GAT and CAT attend a Situation Test: they make a model from a given set of materials, with no extra material allowed, and an English write-up of the idea. The jury looks at space, use of material, composition, colour, construction, finish and presentation, on the spot. The write-up is not marked if it is in any language other than English. In the B.Des merit the guidelines assign GAT 30 percent, CAT 50 percent and the Situation Test 20 percent. A tie goes first to the higher-weighted test, then to GAT, then to Communication Ability and English Comprehension, Quantitative Ability, Analytical and Logical Ability, and General Knowledge and Current Affairs, in that order.
Other programmes use a different objective paper, and this test does not stand in for them. Bachelor of Fashion Technology has the same 100-question Section A in 120 minutes, then a Section B of 50 questions in 60 minutes (Quantitative Ability 15, Analytical and Logical Ability 15, Case Study 20); those two blocks are weighted 30 percent and 70 percent, and there is no CAT. Master of Design has a 120-question GAT in 120 minutes (Communication 50, Quantitative 20, Analytical 25, General Knowledge 25), plus CAT, then an interview. Master of Fashion Management has 150 questions in 180 minutes, including a case-study block of 30, then an interview. Master of Fashion Technology has 150 questions in 180 minutes, including case study and some questions from engineering, then an interview. The guidelines say the number of questions in a section, and the difficulty, may vary by course and by year. The counts used here are the ones printed for Bachelor of Design.
